Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
OVERVIEW
CPTED is a globally recognized, evidence-based approach that reduces crime through environmental improvements. It is a low-cost, grassroots strategy that uses community meetings, cleanups, and infrastructure enhancements.
CPTED is based on four key principles:
Natural Surveillance
Possible offenders are less likely to attempt a crime if they are at risk of being seen, and we are likely to feel safer if we can see and be seen.
Access Control
Part of creating a controlled space is focusing on entry and exit points into buildings, parks, parking lots, and neighborhoods.
Territoriality
The use of physical attributes to create defined lines between owned and public spaces, such as fences, signage, lighting, etc.
Maintenance
Promote a sense of territory for legitimate users and show that the owner cares for and will defend their property against crime.

- Reporting violations of City Codes

- Community Conversations
- Speed mitigation measures
- OPD's Closed Property Signage Program
- OPPD's Dusk-to-Dawn Lighting Program
